How the Epstein Files Expose America’s Media Split on Trump

Today, the House Oversight Committee released a selection of Jeffrey Epstein’s emails that showed his connection to Trump.

The reporting of this shows once again how our “choice” of where we get our news directly affects which news we receive. I remember this vividly during Trump’s impeachments: CNN and MSNBC’s websites featured excerpts of the coverage while Fox News’ and OANN’s headlines focused on anything else.

House Oversight Committees latest document dump pertaining to the Jeffrey Epstein case demonstrates how the realities of the “Left” and “Right” have once again fractured. Take a look and see if you can spot the differences:

The Schism

I woke up to CNN and MSNBC reporting on the newest revelations from the House Oversight Committee while Fox News and OAN were confining their viewers mostly to “business as usual” topics.

Later in the day and knowing that every reporter in the world is sifting through them, Fox News and the House Republicans grudgingly brought themselves to release some of the emails of their own.

Fox’s way of stepping up was to inform their viewers of the documents with a pro-White House sping: “White House slams Dems’ ‘bad-faith’ Epstein doc release as demand for files intensifies“.

Cherry-picking accusations

Fortunately for Republicans accusing Democrats of selectively releasing documents to make the President look bad, they will soon have the opportunity to vote for the full release of all Epstein-related documents.

The easiest way to resolve the “cherry-picking” accusation would be to authorize the full release of the Epstein files. Victims identities would obviously need to be redacted, as should any individuals not suspected of wrongdoing.

Outside of the cherry-picking smear, there really doesn’t seem to be a way to spin these emails that doesn’t make anyone paying attention want to dig further.

The Trump Base

The White House is in full-crisis mode, trying to block the full release, signaling that the files may contain devastating information about Trump or his backers. In trying to block the release, Donald Trump invites the Democrats to continue “selectively release” documents.

As part of its damage control efforts, the White House “invited” Representative Lauren Boebert of Colorado to discuss the matter. Boebert is a pivotal vote on the on the Oversight Committee and has already signaled that she supports full release. Time will tell if she sticks to her word after meeting with Trump, Pam Bondi, Todd Blanche, and Kash Patel.

Remember QAnon?

QAnon, in what now feels like now ancient history, was pivotal in getting Donald Trump elected. Their central tenet being that Washington was full of rich and influential child sex traffickers that Donald Trump would expose (and execute).

QAnon adherents took this very seriously: in what is now called “Pizzagate“, some believers stormed a pizza restaurant in Washington DC, believing that it housed trafficking victims in its basement. There were no victims. There wasn’t even a basement.

What happens next?

The tables have turned, and it looks increasingly likely that Donald Trump could have been one of Jeffrey Epstein’s accomplices. The MAGA-wing of Trumps Republican Party seems intent on raising the bar by calling the document release a “hoax” or demanding nothing short of 100% photographic or video proof of his wrongdoing. Until that bar is met, many seem intent on erasing their outrage over the scandal that once mobilized them.

Because someone from the Right might happen upon this blog (doubtful – it’s new, and I have depressingly low readership), let me be clear: child sex trafficking is abhorrent.

The thing is, everyone to the left of MAGA believes that anyone guilty of it should be punished and not just their political enemies. No tears would be shed no matter which elite(s) wind up arrested, prosecuted and imprisoned.

What happens next is anyones guess
